Clapson Group
Clapson Group
Hello! My name is Marissa Clapson. I am an assistant professor at the University of Prince Edward Island. I also currently hold the position of Chair in the CIC Green Division as well as Vice Chair of the CIC Pride Resource Group. I am deeply passionate about sustainability in chemistry and the workplace. I believe that sustainability, EDI-A, and green chemistry go hand-in hand and allow us to create a better global future.
I completed my BSc. at the University of Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Dennis Hall and Dr. Eric Rivard. I also had the opportunituy to work as an undergraduate co-op student at NOVA Chemicals resulting in a patent. I completed her PhD thesis at the University of Calgary, working with Dr. Warren Piers [Thesis Title: Organocobalt PCP Carbene Complexes for Small Molecule Activation & SoTL Explorations in the Gamification of Learning in General, Organic, and Polymer Chemistry]. Extending from that work, I stablished my company ChemEscape Consulting Inc. focused on developing gamified learning materials for applications in STEM classrooms. I completed my postdoctoral work with Dr. Marcus Drover at the University of Windsor focusing on the application of boranes into the secondary coordination sphere of Nickel complexes.
I am thankful to have received several awards and accolades throughout my research career including NSERC (CGS-D), the Alberta Graduate Excellence Award, the NOVA Chemicals Graduate Scholarship, the QEII Graduate Research Scholarship, the Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Award (Teaching Assistant) and the University of Calgary Teaching Award for Graduate Assistants (Teaching)

Sam MacDonald, 4th-Year
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHER
Hi all! I’m Sam and I’ll be starting my fourth year research project with the Clapson Research Group in the fall. After my first three years of my degree I knew that I would love to be doing my research project in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. Outside of school I am active with rugby where I play with the team at the university and in the summer men’s league, as well as golfing. Also, after graduating I hope to take some time to travel some of the world, specifically parts of Europe and South America.

Ali Nasoudi, 3rd-Year
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHER
Hi, I'm Ali! I'm a chemistry student at the University of Prince Edward Island. After having a discussion with Dr. Clapson and taking the inorganic chemistry course, I realized I'm interested in doing further studies and research in inorganic and organometallic chemistry; therefore, I started my work in the Clapson lab at the UPEI this summer. My research focuses on utilizing a Lewis acidic secondary coordination sphere for the catalytic condensation of carboxylic acids and alcohols. When I'm not in the lab, I either work out at the gym or run outdoors. I am looking forward to continuing my research in my honours research.

Hannah Lawlor, BSc.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHER
Hi, I’m Hannah! I recently graduated from UPEI with a BSc in Biology and a minor in Chemistry! This Summer, I will be assisting the Clapson Research Group in testing and developing the laboratory component for inorganic chemistry. I will be pursuing a master's in applied health sciences this fall, with hopes to later pursue a degree in Medicine! Aside from academics, I’ve been a part of the UPEI Field Hockey team for the past four years, in which of the last two we took home the Atlantic University Field Hockey Championship title! I’m looking forward to continuing both my academic and athletic aspirations!

Carter Wynne, BSc.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHER
Carter is a recent graduate from UPEI with a BSc in Chemistry and a minor in Business Administration. During his degree he was awarded the Dr. Leon Loucks Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry, the UPEI Chemistry Department (1978) Award, and the Diamond Award. Carter has a strong passion for environmental sustainability and is proud to be a part of a research group that holds green chemistry in high regard. He is new to studying the field of inorganic catalysis and is excited to learn more about catalyst development and optimization. Carter's biggest interest is traveling the world, with aspirations to backpack across Europe in the spring of 2025 before he pursues graduate studies.
